[김일웅 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 4일 북부지방산림청은 유한킴벌리(주), (사)평화의숲과 연천 평화의 숲 조성을 위한 공동산림사업 협약을 체결했다고 밝혔다.

이번 공동산림사업은 유한킴벌리(주)와 (사)평화의숲에서 국유림인 연천군 신서면 내산리 일원에 2022년부터 2027년까지 친환경 벌채를 통해 탄소흡수량을 향상시키고, 생물다양성 증진 및 한반도 생태계 복원과 더불어 기업의 ESG 경영의 지속적인 실천을 위하여 추진하는 협력 사업이라고 전했다.

협약 체결 후 사업 추진을 시작하는 2022년도에는 4ha에 조림작업으로 나무 1만본을 식재하여 2027년도까지 24ha에 총 6만본의 나무를 식재할 계획이며, 격년마다 생태조사를 실시하여 협약 종료 시점에 탄소중립과 생물다양성에 대한 데이터를 비교분석하여 연구에 활용하고자 한다고 했다.

본 사업은 동국대 바이오생명공학부, 산림기술사사무소, 국립산림과학원 등 여러 전문자문단의 의견을 모아 조림 설계를 실시하고, 영림단 등의 전문 인력을 활용한 숲가꾸기 작업을 통해 전문적이고 효과적인 사업 추진 결과를 이끌어 낼 전망이라고 했다.

금번 사업을 통해 산림탄소 흡수량 향상으로 기후변화 위기에 대응하고자 하며, 한반도 접경지역 내 생물종이 건강한 생태계에 서식할 수 있는 환경을 유지하여 종다양성을 증진시키는 등 생태계 보호에 기여할 것으로 기대된다고 했다.

최수천 북부지방산림청장은 “산림청과 ㈜유한킴벌리, (사)평화의숲이 협력하여 탄소중립을 실현하고 한반도 접경지역 내 푸른 숲과 건강한 자연생태계를 복원하는 성과를 얻을 수 있기를 기대한다.”고 말했다.
