이 협약은 유네스코 창의도시 네트워크의 예비회원인 강릉시가 작년 네트워크에 가입한 김해시와 창의 산업의 발전을 도모하고 상호 협력의 효과를 보기 위해 이루어졌으며, 주요 협약내용은 네트워크 비전 실현을 위한 공동의 사업 발굴, 네트워크를 홍보하고 시민의 흥미를 불러일으키는 협력사업 발굴, 미식·공예와 민속예술 분야의 상호 발전을 이루고 양 기관의 관계 강화를 위해 필요한 사항의 지원 등이라고 전했다.

강릉시 관계자는 “앞으로 두 도시 간의 적극적인 네트워킹은 창의산업을 육성하고 강릉의 새로운 모습을 발견하는 계기가 될 것이며 이러한 교류를 통해 창의도시 네트워크 가입(미식분야)에 한 걸음 다가가기를 기대한다.”고 말했다.

한편, 강릉시는 오는 5월 말 유네스코 한국위원회에 국내심사를 신청할 예정이며 오는 6월 말경 PT발표에 이어, 국내가입 승인 여부가 결정될 예정이라고 했다.
