지난해 4월부터 공사를 시작해 4,613㎡ 면적에 마당 3개소, 주차장 2개소 등을 조성하고 향교의 분위기에 어울리는 수목을 심었으며, 원주시 제1호 역사공원인 만큼 특색있는 역사공원을 조성하기 위해 공원 내 모든 시설에 대한 위치, 배치, 크기, 색, 재질 등 자재 및 공법 선정에 심혈을 기울였음은 물론 견실 시공에도 최선을 다했다고 전했고 특히 강학공간과 제향공간으로 구성된 향교 및 유교의 공간적·교육적 의미와 관련된 디자인에 착안해 도안을 설치함으로써 볼거리 제공 등 특색있는 역사공원 조성은 물론 사업효과의 상승을 도모했다고 전했다.

한편, 본 사업은 역사와 현재가 공감하는 원주향교 일원 도시 정비를 통해 지역 문화재 위상 제고 및 주거환경 개선 등 지역의 활력을 증진하고자 지난 2017년 국토교통부의 도시활력 증진지역 개발 공모사업에 선정돼 추진한 사업이며, 국비 포함 총 77억 원이 투입됐고, 차후 남원로와 연결되는 원주향교 진출입 도로 개설을 완료해 연내 전체사업을 마무리할 계획이며 또한, 원주향교와 강원도향교재단의 동의를 거쳐 도로·주차장 등 도시계획시설에 편입된 향교재단 소유 24필지 8,206㎡를 기부채납 및 지상권 설정 등 무상으로 소유권등기 이전해 공시지가 금액으로만 약 32억 상당의 보상비를 예산 절감하는 커다란 성과도 있었다고 했다.
