스마트시티 국제표준[ISO 37106]은 지속가능한 도시와 커뮤니티 모델 설립을 위한 국제표준으로, 국제표준화기구(ISO) 영국표준협회(BSI)에서 총 4개 분야 22개 세부항목을 평가하며, 강릉시는 4차 산업혁명 시대의 흐름에 따른 효율적인 스마트도시 사업 추진을 위해 지난 2021년 1월 강릉시 스마트도시계획[2021∼2025년]을 수립, 올해 1월 스마트도시과를 신설하고, 스마트도시 사업의 본격 추진을 위해 영국표준협회(BSI)에 인증 심사를 신청하여 1차 예비심사와 2차 본 심사를 거쳐 최종 인증기준인 3레벨을(총 5레벨) 달성하여 인증을 획득했다고 전했다.

이번 인증심사에서 강릉시가 시내 전 지역을 대상으로 구축하고 있는 지능형교통체계(ITS) 구축사업과, 스마트시티 챌린지사업 등 스마트시티 인프라 투자 부문에서 가장 높은 점수를 받았으며, 그동안 추진해 오던 스마트도시계획의 비전·전략과 운영현황에 대한 객관적 검증으로 지속가능한 스마트도시 기반을 마련함과 동시에 오는 2026년 ITS 세계총회 유치를 위한 발판을 마련하고 각종 행사 유치 및 대내·외 홍보 시 주요 전략자료로 활용할 수 있게 되었다고 했다.

강릉시 관계자는 “앞으로의 스마트도시 사업 추진에, 시민 중심에서의 전략과 자원 관리 및 이익실현 추구라는 국제표준 요구에 맞춰, 시민과 함께 도시문제를 해결하고, 시민이 받을 편익이 무엇인가를 최우선에 두고 추진해 나갈 계획이다”고 말했다.
