[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 4월 14일, 신동읍 번영회에서는 함백광업소 추모공원에서 함백광업소 순직 산업전사 추모행사를 진행했다고 밝혔다.

이날 추모행사는 산업전사 유가족 및 기관·단체장, 지역주민 등이 참석한 가운데 국민의례, 헌화 및 분향, 추모사, 추모글 낭독, 추모공연, 표창패 전달 등의 순으로 진행되었다고 했다.

함백광업소 순직 산업전사 추모행사는 지난 1970년대와 80년대 국가기간산업으로 중추적 에너지 지원을 담당했던 함백광업소 부지에 탄광사고로 희생된 산업전사들의 숭고한 희생과 공훈을 널리 기리기 위해 마련되었고, 추모행사가 열린 함백광업소 추모공원은 지난 1993년 폐광한 신동읍 함백광업소 자미갱 부지에 대한민국 경제의 한 축을 담당한 산업역군으로 함백광업소에 근무하다 탄광사고로 희생된 광부들을 추모하고 탄광근로자들의 역사 현장을 보존하기 위하여 지난 2015년부터 2년에 걸쳐 추모비 및 추모공원을 조성했다고 전했다.

정선군 신동읍에 위치한 함백탄광은 지난 1950년 한국전쟁 중에 대한석탄공사 함백광업소로 개광한 이래 1993년 폐광전까지 1천7백만톤의 석탄을 생산하며 국가기간산업으로서 중추적인 역할을 하였으며, 1980년대 2,000명이 넘는 광부가 종사하였고, 함백탄광이 위치한 신동읍 인구가 2만5,000여 명에 이를 정도로 호황기를 누렸지만 정부의 석탄산업합리화사업 추진으로 1993년 10월 폐광되었다고 했다.
