[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 횡성군은 4월 1일 오전 10시, 횡성보훈공원에서 '횡성군민 만세운동 103주년 기념식'을 개최했다고 밝혔다. 

횡성군은 매년 4월 1일 애국선열들의 숭고한 뜻을 기리기 위해 횡성군의 보훈단체를 비롯한 기관·단체장들과 함께 기념식을 개최하고 있으며, 이날 기념식은 횡성 4.1만세운동 약사 설명, 독립선언문 낭독, 헌화 및 분향 등이 진행되었고, 특히 이번 기념식에는 4·1 군민만세운동에 참가한 애국지사의 유족들과 한말 의병장 및 일제 강점기 광복군으로 활약한 12인의 횡성 출신 애국지사의 유족들을 초청하여 횡성군민들에게 소개함으로써, 103년 전 횡성의 얼을 기억하는 뜻깊은 행사로 꾸려졌으며, 또한, 독립선언문을 ‘우리말로 쉽게 풀어 쓴 독립선언문’을 낭독하여 군민의 이해를 돕고 함께 의미를 되새겼다고 전했다. 

횡성은 도내 최대 규모로 독립만세운동이 펼쳐진 곳으로, 1919년 3월 27일부터 4월 12일까지 만세운동이 이어졌으며, 특히 4월 1일 횡성장터에서 수천명이 떨쳐 일어나 전개한 만세운동은 강원도에서 가장 격렬했던 만세운동으로 기록되었다고 했다.

횡성군 관계자는 “횡성은 국난이 있을 때마다 의병이 결성되었던 애국 애족의 고장이다. 국가와 민족을 위한 뜨거운 피를 가진 선조들의 고귀한 뜻을 횡성의 문화 컨텐츠로 계승·발전 시켜 나가겠다.”고 말했다.
