동서고속도로는 정부가 1996년 국가 간선도로망 계획에 포함하여 발표했으며, 전체 250km구간 중 평택∼제천 127km구간이 2015년 개통되었고, 2020년 제천∼영월 구간이 기획재정부 예비타당성 조사를 통과하였다. 그러나, 영월∼삼척 구간에 대해서는 진척이 없는 상태이라고 했다.
