숲가꾸기패트롤은 북부지방산림청과 6개 국유림관리소에서 선발한다. 신청자격은 만 18세 이상 정기소득이 없는 신체 건강한 자를 대상으로, 서류전형과 기계톱 및 임업 기계장비 실무능력을 종합적으로 평가하여 최종 선발한다고 했다.

숲가꾸기패트롤은 1개단 4∼5명으로, 기계톱 등 산림 관련 장비 활용이 가능한 숙련된 기술자로 구성하여 지방청과 각 국유림관리소에서 1개단씩 운영하며, 각종 산림피해(덩굴류, 병해충, 산림재해 등)에 신속히 대응하고, 국민이 산림에서 발생하는 위험으로부터 안전할 수 있도록 주택 지장목, 농경지 지장목 등을 제거하는 활동을 한다고 했다.
