[김일웅 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 환경부 원주지방환경청은 철원군, (사)철원디엠지두루미생태관광협의체 등과 함께 철원평야 내 두루미 주요 서식지를 대상으로 볏짚존치, 무논조성 등 두루미 서식지 보전사업을 추진한다고 밝혔다.

두루미 월동시기인 내년 2월까지 두루미 주요 활동지를 중심으로 가을 수확이 끝난 논 약 400만㎡에 볏짚을 존치시키고 철원읍 내포리 등 약 30만㎡ 규모의 논에 물을 가두어 안정적인 휴식공간 및 잠자리를 제공한다고 했다. 

또한, 지역주민 등과 함께 무논 조성지 등에 영양가가 풍부한 우렁이(약 1톤), 볍씨(약 2.5톤) 등을 공급해 두루미의 안정적인 겨울나기를 지원한다고 했다.

철원 민통선 내 경작지, DMZ 내부 습지 및 한탄강 일대는 국제적으로 주목받는 두루미, 재두루미 등 겨울 철새의 주요 서식지이며, 원주지방환경청은 2015년부터 두루미 서식지를 보호하고자 민·관 협업을 통해 두루미 서식지 보전사업을 지속적으로 추진해 왔다고 했다.

그간 노력의 결실로 철원평야를 월동지로 이용하는 두루미는 매년 증가하고 있으며, 2012년(1,718마리) 대비 2021년에는 두루미류 개체수가 약 4배 증가한 6,456마리가 도래했다고 했다.
