[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 강릉시는 점차 늘어나는 길고양이의 개체 수를 조절하기 위해 주택밀집지역 및 번화가에서 서식하는 길고양이를 대상으로 본격적인 중성화사업을 추진한다고 밝혔다.

이번 사업은 길고양이의 전염병 확산을 예방하고 사고 위험성을 줄이며, 길고양이로 인한 소음 및 위생 문제를 해소하기 위한 것이라고 전했다.

길고양이를 포획하여 연계 동물병원에 운송 후 중성화 수술을 실시하고 포획장소에 방사하는 방식으로 진행되며, 중성화를 완료한 개체는 왼쪽 귀 끝을 1cm 절제하여 미중성화 개체와 구별할 수 있다고 했다.

강릉시 관계자는“길고양이 문제로 주민간 갈등이 심화되는 상황이다. 이번 지원사업을 통해 도시 생태계에서 사람과 길고양이가 조화롭게 공존할 수 있는 인도적인 방법을 찾을 수 있을 것”이며,“길고양이 민원 빈발지역 및 주택밀집지역을 정기적으로 확인하여 권역별로 체계적인 개체수 관리를 실시하겠다.”고 말했다.
