[김일중 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 지난 1월 28일 양주시는 양주 회암사지 왕실축제가 경기도 지역축제심의위원회를 통해 경기도를 대표하는 우수 지역축제인 ‘2022 경기관광축제’로 선정됐다고 밝혔다.

경기관광축제는 경기도가 매년 31개 시·군을 대상으로 관광 상품성이 뛰어나고 대외 경쟁력이 있는 축제를 육성하기 위해 지원하는 사업으로, 양주 회암사지 왕실축제가 첫 도전에 선정되는 쾌거를 이뤄 도비 6천만원을 지원받게 된다고 했다.

양주 회암사지 왕실축제는 ‘태조 이성계의 치유의 궁궐’ 양주 회암사지를 무대로 왕실문화, 힐링, 고고학을 테마로 개최되는 역사문화축제로, 양주시는 오는 10월 초에 코로나19 상황을 고려해 대면·비대면 프로그램을 병행하는 하이브리드 축제를 개최할 예정이라고 했다. 

주요 프로그램으로는 랜선 어가행렬, 창작뮤지컬, 양주 무형문화재 공연, 대가람의 미디어파사드, 이야기 버스킹, 어가행렬 캐릭터 퍼포먼스, 딜리버리 체험, 회암사지 별빛투어, 힐링 ASMR, 청동금탁을 울려라 문화재 퀴즈대회, 유적 연계 AR, VR 체험 및 미션체험, 회암사의 보물을 찾아라, 치유의 궁궐 힐링 숲멍체험 등 다채로운 체험프로그램이 진행되며, 야간경관조명과 포토존 등을 설치·운영할 계획이라고 했다.

양주 회암사지는 1964년 국가 사적으로 지정된 후 1997년부터 2016년까지 약 20여년에 걸친 토지매입, 발굴조사, 박물관 건립, 유적정비 등 회암사지 종합정비 사업을 완료하여 일반에 공개됐으며, 또한 2017년 처음 축제를 시작하여 2019년까지 매년 성황리에 개최됐고, 2020년은 코로나19로 취소, 2021년은 온라인 축제로 운영하여 9만여명의 관람객이 참여하는 양주시 대표 축제로 자리매김했다고 전했다.

한편 고려 말 조선 초 최대의 왕실사찰이었던 회암사는 고려 말 공민왕의 후원으로 왕사 나옹이 262칸의 규모로 중창한 이후 태조 이성계의 각별한 관심으로 스승이었던 무학대사를 회암사 주지로 머무르게 하는 것은 물론 이성계가 상왕으로 물러난 후 회암사에 궁실을 짓고 수도생활을 한 것으로도 잘 알려져있다고 했다.

회암사는 16세기 후반 원인 모를 화재로 인해 원래의 절은 불타 없어지고 터만 남았지만 1만여 평에 달하는 유적에서는 일반사찰과는 다른 궁궐 건축의 요소가 확인됐으며, 조선전기 왕실의 품격 있는 문화를 엿볼 수 있는 왕실 도자기와 궁궐에서나 사용하던 청기와, 마루장식기와 등 유물 수십만 점이 출토되어 당시 회암사의 위상을 보여준다고 밝혔다.
