[장선희 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 지난 2월, 의정부시는 관내 전통사찰 제76호 미륵암의 대웅전 주변 석축 및 기단 보수공사를 전통사찰 보존정비 사업비 8천만 원을 투입해 준공했다고 밝혔다.

미륵암은 고산로 65번길 94에 위치하고 있으며, 세조의 재위 연간(1455~1468년)에 창건됐고, 미륵암의 창건과 관련해 조선 세조 때 어느 농부가 밭을 갈다가 미륵불상을 얻었는데, 이를 알게 된 세조가 신숙주에게 명을 내려 절을 짓게 했다는 전설이 있다고 했다.

전통사찰은 역사적으로 시대적 특색을 뚜렷하게 지니고 있다고 인정되는 사찰로, 한국 고유의 불교·문화·예술 및 건축사의 흐름을 이해하는데 특히 필요하다고 인정되는 사찰을 '전통사찰의 보존 및 지원에 관한 법률'에 의해 문화체육관광부장관이 지정하며, 의정부시 관내에는 6개의 전통사찰이 위치하고 있으며 산지에 위치해 유려한 경관을 자랑한다고 전했다.
