야간연장 어린이집이란 기준보육시간(07:30~19:30) 이후 최대 24:00 까지 연장해 아동을 보육하는 어린이집으로 야간연장 보육료는 국가에서 전액 지원하고 있다고 했다. 

야간연장 보육은 만 0∼2세 연장보육료, 만 3∼5세 누리과정보육료, 다문화보육료, 장애아보육료, 유아학비 지원을 받는 아동의 보호자가 야간연장으로 지정된 어린이집에 직접 신청서를 제출해야 하며, 다른 어린이집이나 유치원에서 주간보육을 하는 아동도 19:30이후, 월 60시간까지 보육료 부담 없이 이용 가능하다고 했다. 

의정부시는 2021년 9월 말 기준으로 총 40개소의 야간연장 어린이집을 운영하고 있으며, 또한 야간연장 보육의 질 향상을 위해 해당 야간 연장반의 보육아동이 2명 이상이고, 보육시간 총합이 월 20시간 이상일 경우 운영비 및 인건비를 지원하고 있다고 전했다.

현재는 코로나19로 인한 휴원 상황 고려 및 지속적인 취약보육 서비스 제공을 위하여 특례를 적용, 기준을 완화하여 보조금을 지원하고 있다고 전했다.
