[장선희 기자 = 경기북부] 지난 6월 29일 동두천시는 일제 잔재 청산을 위한 일본식 의심 지명 변경을 위해 동두천시 지명위원회를 개최했다고 밝혔다.  

이날 지명위원회에서는 일제강점기 왕(王)자를 왕(旺)으로 바꾸는 한자의 의도적 왜곡을 바로잡고자 심혈을 기울였으며, 국토지리정보원의 일본식 표기지명 조사결과에 따라 한자 왜곡 의심지로 선정된 왕방이(旺方里)의 한자 지명 변경에 대한 사항을 심의·의결했다고 말했다. 

지명위원회는 「공간정보의 구축 및 관리 등에 관한 법률」 제91조에 따라 구성되며, 지명의 제정, 변경과 그 밖에 지명에 관한 중요한 사항을 심의·의결하고, 지명의 제정 및 변경 절차는 행정구역 관할 시군지명위원회와 경기도지명위원회의 심의를 거쳐, 국가지명위원회에서 최종적으로 심의·의결하고, 국토지리정보원이 고시함으로써 최종적으로 완료된다고 했다. 

동두천시 지명위원회에서는 왕방이의 한자 지명을 ‘왕성할 왕(旺)’자가 아닌 ‘임금 왕(王)’자를 쓰는 ‘왕방이(王方里)’로 최종변경을 결정했으며, 이를 경기도 지명위원회에 상정할 계획이라고 말했다.

최용덕 시장은 “올바른 역사와 문화를 후손에 물려줄 수 있도록, 지속적으로 고유 지명을 발굴 및 정비하여, 일제 잔재 청산을 위해 노력하겠다”고 밝혔다.
