이날 행사는 가평종합운동장 옆에 있는 3․15항일운동 기념비 경내에서 열린 기념식에는 서태원 군수를 비롯한 군의회 의장, 광복회 및 보훈 단체장 등 30여명이 참석해 선열들의 숭고한 넋을 기렸다.

기념식에서 서 군수는 “일제 식민치하에서 조국의 자주독립을 위해 가평에서 활약한 의병활동과 3.1만세 운동의 정신을 계승하여 국가발전에 기여하고 선열들이 보여준 자주독립의 기상과 서로 돕는 상부상조의 마음으로 힘을 모아 힐링과 행복, 하나되는 가평 100년을 이뤄나가자”고 말했다.

가평 3·15 항일운동은 99년 전인 1919년 3월 15, 16일 양일간 이규봉 선생의 주도로 북면을 시발로 가평 일대에서 3천200여 군민이 군청 앞에 운집해 독립만세를 외치며 일제에 항거한 거사다.

당시 일제의 총칼에 군민 23명이 희생되고 28명이 붙잡혀 모진 수난을 겪는 등 인명피해를 입기도 했으나 독립운동의 대중적인 기반을 넓혀 애국애족 정신을 확산시키는 분수령이 됐다.
