최근 5년간 개 물림 사건 통계를 보면 연평균 2천230건, 일평균 6.11건 발생하고 있으며 지속적으로 증가하는 추세이고, 개 물림 사고시 치료비 또한 늘고 있어 1인당 148만 원에서 239만 원으로 61.4% 상승하고 있다고 전했다.

최근 남양주시에서 대형견에 물려 사람이 사망한 사건이 발생하여 들개로 인한 피해에 대한 관심이 모아지고 있어, 이에 의정부시는 들개로 인한 피해를 최소화하고, 시민의 안전을 도모하고자 피해에 대비한 대책을 마련했다고 밝혔다.

들개로 인한 피해에 대비하기 위해서는 가장 먼저 해결하여야 할 과제는 유기 동물의 발생을 방지하는 것이라고 밝혔다.
