[김현우 기자 = 경기북부] 오는 22일 양주시는 ‘제51주년 지구의 날’을 맞아 관공서, 공공기관을 중심으로 밤 8시부터 10분간 소등행사를 실시한다고 밝혔다. 

지구의 날은 1969년 미국 캘리포니아주에서 발생한 원유 유출사고를 계기로 1970년 4월 22일 환경을 보호하자는 취지로 시작된 세계기념일이며 우리나라도 기후위기, 탄소중립 인식제고와 국민의 기후행동 필요성을 홍보하고자 기후변화주간을 정해 매년 행사를 추진해오고 있다고 했다. 

이에 양주시는 ‘지구 회복(Restore our Earth) 바로 지금, 나부터! 2050 탄소중립’을 주제로 오는 28일까지를 기후변화주간으로 지정하고 전국적으로 시행하는 소등행사 캠페인을 추진한다고 전했다.  

시청, 직속기관, 사업소, 11개 읍면동은 건물 내 전등과 외부조명 소등, 전자기기 전원차단 등을 실시하고 일반주택, 아파트, 상가, 가정 등은 자율적으로 참여할 수 있다고 했다. 

양주시 관계자는 "기후 변화에 따른 각종 환경문제가 대두되고 있는 가운데 기후 변화의 심각성을 인식하고 에너지 절약 등 저탄소 생활 실천행동을 이끌기 위해 시민들에게 적극 독려하겠다"며 “이번 소등행사에 많은 시민의 관심과 참여 부탁한다”고 말했다.
