[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 원주시 보건소가 국방부 유해발굴감식단 주관 ‘6·25 전사자 유가족 유전자 시료 채취 우수 보건소’에 선정돼 최근 국방부장관 감사장 및 감사패를 받았다고 밝혔다.

지난해 원주시 보건소는 전국 시·군 가운데 네 번째, 강원도 내에서는 가장 많은 30건의 시료를 채취했다고 전했다.

국방부 유해발굴감시단은 2000년 시작한 6·25 전사자 유해발굴사업을 통해 2020년까지 총 124,000여 호국용사 중 12,592구의 유해를 발굴했으며, 62,337명의 유가족 DNA 시료를 채취해 전사자 161명의 신원을 확인했다고 했다.

국방부 유해발굴감식단 관계자는 “6·25전쟁 세대의 고령화, 지형변화, 국토 개발로 인한 전투 현장 훼손, 전사자 개인 정보 및 단서 부족 등으로 사업에 어려움이 크다.”며, “앞으로도 많은 관심과 참여를 바란다.”라고 말했다. 

이미나 원주시 보건소장은 “시민 대상 홍보 및 유전자 시료 확보를 위한 상호협력을 강화해 더 많은 호국용사를 유가족 품으로 돌려드릴 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠다.”라고 말했다.
