[김일중 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 지난 11월 11일 대한민국 상이군경회 동두천시지회는 소요산역 앞 벨기에·룩셈부르크 참전기념비 앞에서 6.25전쟁 유엔참전용사의 희생과 공헌을 기리는 추모 행사를 열었다고 밝혔다.

대한민국과 자유민주주의 수호를 위해 기꺼이 목숨을 바친 유엔참전용사들의 숭고한 헌신을 기억하고 자유와 평화의 소중함을 되새기기 위한 이번 행사는 지난 2017년 처음 개최되었고 올해로 다섯 번째를 맞았으며, 남궁배 회장을 비롯한 50여 명의 상이군경회 동두천시지회 회원들은 이날 11시, 유엔기념공원이 있는 부산을 향해 일제히 묵념을 올렸다고 했다.

전쟁기간 부산항을 통해 들어온 벨기에와 룩셈부르크 참전군 총 3,498명은 1개 전투대대와 1개 소대로 구성되었으며, 금굴산과 임진강에서 중공군의 1952년 4월 공세를 저지하고 중공군 차단선을 돌파함으로써 유엔군 전선 재편성 시간을 연장하는 등 동두천과 연천지역에서 크게 전과를 올리며 활약했고, 3년간 99명이 전사했고 336명이 부상당했으며, 미국 대통령 부대표창과 태극·을지 등 무공훈장 80여 개를 받았다고 전했다.

남궁배 상이군경회 동두천시지회장은 “목숨을 다해 이 나라를 지켜내신 6.25 참전용사들의 명예와 자긍심을 계승하고 전파하는데 선도적인 역할을 다하겠다”고 소감을 밝혔다.
