[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 오는 25일부터 29일까지 양주시는 관내 농가, 창고 등에 방치된 폐농약을 집중 수거한다고 밝혔다.

폐농약은 ‘폐기물관리법’ 제14조4 규정에 따르면 생활폐기물 중 질병 유발, 신체 손상 등 인간의 건강과 주변환경에 피해를 유발할 수 있는 폐기물로 지정돼 있다고 했다.

그간 사용하고 남은 폐농약에 대한 종합적인 수거·처리체계의 부재로 농가에서는 개별적인 처리에 애로를 겪었으며 무분별한 방치·폐기로 인한 환경오염과 안전사고 발생의 우려가 제기돼왔다고 했다.

이에 양주시는 지난 2020년부터 시범 추진한 ‘폐농약 수거처리 사업’을 농가 수요에 맞춰 확대 시행하며 지역 농촌환경 개선에 앞장서고 있다고 전했다.

폐농약 배출 방법은 농가 등에서 쓰고 남은 폐농약이 있을 경우 외부로 새거나 유출되지 않도록 밀봉해 가까운 읍면동 행정복지센터 내 지정 장소에 배출하면 된다고 했다.

오는 25일부터 29일까지 5일간 수거된 폐농약은 전문 처리업체를 통해 안전하게 처리할 예정이라고 전했다.

양주시 관계자는 “지난 2020년 시범사업으로 시작한 폐농약 수거처리사업이 성공적으로 안착했다는 점에 큰 보람을 느낀다”며 “폐농약으로 인한 농촌 환경오염을 줄일 수 있도록 농민 참여율 향상에 더욱 힘쓰겠다”고 말했다.
