[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 지난 23일 양주시는 남면 입암리 소재 시범포장에서 소비자 선호형 찰옥수수 생산기술 보급을 위해 추진해 온 찰옥수수 생력화 재배기술 시범사업 중간평가회를 개최했다고 밝혔다.

이날 중간평가회에는 곽인구 기술지원과장, 시범사업 농가 회원, 관계 공무원 등이 참석해 지난 4월 중순부터 5월 초순에 이식한 찰옥수수 첫 수확 이후 시범요인 투입에 따른 품종별 재배기술, 노동력 절감 방안, 수량·당도, 소비선호도 등 종합 의견을 공유하는 시간을 가졌다고 했다.

올해는 지난 4월 하순부터 5월 초순까지 이어진 저온현상으로 적기 정식이 이뤄지지 못해 활착 불량, 조기 개화, 수정 불량 등 생리장해가 일부 발생했으나 체계적인 재배관리 조절로 안정적인 수확을 거뒀다고 했다.

특히 이번에 수확된 옥수수는 일반 옥수수보다 단맛이 높고 항산화 성분인 베타카로틴이 풍부해 젊은 소비자들 사이에서 호응이 높아 온·오프라인 사전예약과 길거리 직거래로 전량 판매됐다고 했다.

조원구 찰옥수수 생산단지 대표는 “경기도농업기술원에서 경기 지역특화 브랜드 육성으로 개발한 새미찰, 장수흑찰 등을 시범포장에 심어 관행대비 10~15% 증수로 찰옥수수 농가 소득 향상에 큰 도움이 됐다”며 “이에 가을재배용으로 추가 파종을 준비할 예정”이라고 말했다.

한태수 농업기술센터 소장은 “최근 찰옥수수가 다이어트와 피부미용 효과가 뛰어난 웰빙식품으로 소비자에게 큰 인기를 끌고 있어 농가 신소득원으로 자리잡고 있다”며 “향후 경기 육성품종을 지속적으로 보급 확대해 농가소득 창출에 기여하겠다”고 포부를 밝혔다. 

한편 양주시는 농촌 고령화에 따른 노동력 절감과 농가 소득증대를 위해 경기도농업기술원에서 개발한 신품종 종자인 ‘새미찰’과 ‘장수흑찰’을 비롯해 작물 정식, 비료 주기를 동시에 할 수 있는 용출제어형 완효성 파구처리 비료 등을 지원하는 찰옥수수로 생력화 재배기술 시범사업을 추진 중이며 현재 3.3㏊ 규모의 시범포장에 회원 4명이 참여하고 있다고 전했다.
