[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 지난 7일 새마을지도자양주시협의회는 양주2동 소재 휴경지(660㎡)에 온실가스 저감과 탄소 제로 배출에 뛰어난 효과가 있는 케냐프(양삼)를 심었다고 밝혔다. 

이날 사업에는 김민규 부회장, 지현소 양주1동, 이응수 양주2동, 황규영 회천4동협의회장 등 새마을지도자 10명이 사업에 동참했다고 전했다. 

케냐프(양삼)은 목화, 마와 함께 세계 3대 섬유작물로 원산지가 아프리카 또는 인도이며 무궁화(아욱)과에 속하는 1년생 풀(초본)로 생육기간이 120일로 비교적 짧고 3~5m까지 성장한다고 했다.

또한 케냐프는 온실가스 흡수력이 뛰어난데 이산화탄소는 상수리 나무에 10배, 소나무에 9배이며 이산화질소는 해바라기, 옥수수의 30배 이상이라고 했다. 

사업에 참가한 이응수 새마을지도자양주2동협의회장은 “최근에 사람들이 화석연료를 많이 사용하다보니 하나뿐인 지구가 이상 기후로 몸살을 앓고 있는데 이러한 것을 극복하기 위해서는 온실 저감과 탄소 제로 배출에 효과가 있는 케냐프 식재가 좋은 대안이 될 수 있기에 사업에 동참하였다”고 소감을 밝혔다. 

한편 새마을지도자양주시협의회는 월1회 정기적으로 국토 대 청결운동과 마을 환경가꾸기사업, 하천 정화 활동, 자원재활용 수집 등 탄소중립 실천으로 지역사회 발전에 기여하고 있다고 전했다.
