양주시는 미래 말산업 성장에 필요한 잠재 승마인구를 발굴하기 위한 일환으로 2018년에 양주시 유소년승마단을 창단했으며, 승용마 관리와 훈련을 통한 승마기술을 습득하고 각종 대내외 승마대회에 참가해 좋은 성적을 달성하고 있다고 했다.

유소년승마단 모집인원은 4명으로 2022년 기준 양주시에 거주하고 관내 학교에 재학 중인 초등학교 5학년부터 중학교 2학년까지이며, 서류, 실기심사를 거쳐 최종 선발된 승마단원에게는 승마장비, 훈련비, 승마대회 출전 등이 지원되고, 신청은 양주시승마장에서 접수하며, 기타 자세한 사항은 양주시승마장, 양주시농업기술센터 축산과 축산정책팀으로 문의하면 된다고 전했다.

양주시 관계자는 “이번에 유소년승마단 운영 사업비를 확보한 만큼 향후에도 승마단 운영 지원 사업비를 확보해 양주시 학생들이 부담 없이 즐길 수 있는 승마단을 운영할 계획이다”라며 “성장하는 청소년에게 말과 교감하는 다양한 체험과 대회 참여로 심신단련을 통해 올바른 인성 함양 등의 교육적 효과를 거둘 수 있을 것으로 기대한다”고 말했다.
