[김현우 기자 = 경기북부/강원] 속초시시설관리공단이 속초엑스포 임시주차장 부지(조양동 1541-1번지)에 조성한 야외 썰매장이 겨울철 움츠리기 쉬운 지역 아동 및 청소년에 야외활동을 통한 건강 증진과 즐길거리 제공하며 인기를 끌고 있다고 밝혔다.

지난해 12월 4일부터 운영을 시작한 야외 썰매장은 올해 1월 10일까지 8,143명의 이용자들이 찾아 코로나 19와 겨울철 야외활동이 부족한 지역 아이들에게 즐거움을 주고 있다고 했다. 

2021년 2월 처음 도입된 전천후 썰매장은 눈이나 얼음이 없어도 이용 가능한 에버슬라이드 슬로프 형식으로 날씨와 상관없이 언제든지 즐길 수 있으며, 시설규모는 높이 4m, 넓이 6.7m, 슬로프 길이가 17m이고 보행로는 야자매트를 설치하여 이용자의 편의를 제공하고, 날씨가 점차 더워지면 제설기로 물을 분사해 물안개를 만들어 아동 및 청소년 등 이용자의 재미와 청량감을 더 한다고 했다.

오는 1월 28일까지 속초시시설관리공단은 부업대학생 20명을 투입하여  썰매장 이용객 안전관리(상단, 하단), 이용객 보행로 안전한 거리두기 및 정비, 이용객 발열 관리 및 마스크 착용 안내, 썰매장 소독 및 정리 및 주변 환경정비 등 안전한 시설이용과 코로나바이러스 감염증 예방을 위해 안전관리에도 힘쓰고 있다고 전했다.

특히, 야외 썰매장을 찾는 아이들을 위해 매일 자원봉사로 아이들의 안전을 지키는 지역의 어르신이 있어 야외 썰매장 풍경을 더욱 훈훈하게 하고 있다고 했다. 

자원봉사자 김회율 씨(남, 76세)는 2021년 2. 18 ~ 5. 9까지 야외 썰매장 운영 시 자원봉사활동을 남다른 애착으로 성실하게 수행했으며, 올 겨울에도 2021. 12. 4부터 현재까지 하루도 빠지지 않고 봉사활동을 수행하고 있다고 했다.

속초시시설관리공단 관계자는“코로나 19로 실내에만 있는 아동, 청소년들에게 잠깐의 야외활동을 통해 코로나 19로 지친 몸과 마음을 작게나마 달랠 수 있는 기회가 되기를 바라며, 안전하게 썰매장을 이용할 수 있도록 코로나 19 및 안전사고 예방에 철저를 기하겠다.” 라고 말했다. 

한편, 엑스포 잔디공원도 겨울철 활동량이 부족한 아이들에게 또 다른 재미를 선사하고 있으며, 지난 12월 말 영동지방에 내린 폭설로 하얀 솜이불처럼 눈으로 덮인 엑스포 잔디광장에 많은 아이들이 찾아와 눈사람을 만들고 눈싸움을 하는 등 야외활동에 목마른 겨울철 아이들의 새로운 놀이터로 변모하고 있다고 전했다.
