Interview with actors Jo Pung-rae and Kim Do-bin in musical'June'

[Reporter Hak-Young Kim = North Gyeonggi Province]  The creative musical <June> to be put on the stage of the Gyeonggi Art Center on the 27th. You can see what kind of feelings the actors who are working with in meaningful works can be seen.

The creative musical <June>, planned and co-produced by the Gyeonggi Art Center and the Gwangmyeong Cultural Foundation in the fall of 2019, will finally be on stage on February 27th.

The musical <June>, with the theme of the June 1987 Democratic Uprising, depicts college students who came to the center of the democracy movement in Seoul in 1987.

In this performance, actors Jo Pung-rae and Kim Do-bin, who played the roles of “Pungyo” and “Docheol,” respectively, introduced the musical <Yuwol> and expressed their feelings while preparing for the performance.

Q1: Could you please introduce the opportunity for you to participate in the musical <June> and the roles each person has.

Jo Pung-rae (hereinafter referred to as Cho): I enjoyed watching the movie <1987>, which became a hot topic a few years ago, but I was interested in hearing that a musical was produced with a theme and content similar to that of the movie. Unexpectedly, a role proposal came in to me, and I was so happy to participate.

My role, “Pungyo,” is a freshman from a local university. A pure 20-year-old young man who was not very interested in rallies or student protests is going to draw a picture of a change as he enters university and observes events happening in the school and around him and participates in person.

Dobin Kim (hereinafter referred to as Kim): I also participated in <June> on a similar occasion with actor Jo Pung-rae. My role,'Docheol', is a freshman who entered college in 1987 with abundance. I wanted to enjoy a free college life like any other university student at the time, but after confronting what was happening in society at the time, I couldn't.

Q2: What did you feel during preparation for the musical <June>?

Jo: As many of you may agree, I think the “June 1987 Democratization Uprising” is a very important and thrilling moment in our history. So, in the course of cognitive practice, I felt a lot of warming in my chest.

In addition, just as those who participated in the democratization movement at the time overcame the great obstacles in front of them, I felt that we should silently overcome the great obstacles that lie in front of them. This is especially true in the current situation in which we are experiencing the situation of Corona 19.

Kim: As I prepared for this performance, I also came to think more than ever about the historical significance of the June 1987 Democratic Uprising. Meanwhile, the musical <June> practice site always has a nice atmosphere and fun. Had it not been for Corona 19, I would have been able to practice more enjoyably, but this was a disappointment. Acting and singing while wearing a mask was a lot harder than I thought.

Q3: You have been on various stages so far, and among them, would you choose the most special role or moment for you?

Kim: When I was part of the Seoul Arts Troupe and performed, there were frequent local performances. In particular, there were many times when I visited and performed in culturally marginalized areas. I can't forget the moment when audiences of all ages, from children who came to the concert hall, to grandmothers and grandparents, gave applause with faces full of happiness.

Joe: It may sound clichéd, but for me, every moment I stand on stage is special. It's really special to me to be on stage after a long period of practice with other actors.

Q4: I know that preparations for the performance started early, but the opening is being delayed due to the Corona 19 situation. Can you pick a passage for the audience who are waiting for the work?

Jo: It is one of the lines of'Abundance' in the play. “While the heart is beating”

Kim: This is the line of'Do-cheol' that I am in charge of.

“Don’t hate it,

It's a hate not loved.

It's unnatural hate.

Try to love.

Try to be loved.

Because we are humans.”
