Eulji University Leukemia and Omics Research Institute signed an MOU with Optorain

Research and development of diagnostic methods to reduce side effects and cost burden of anticancer drugs

[Reporter Il-jung Kim = Northern Gyeonggi/Gangwon] On December 8th, Eulji University's Leukemia Omics Research Institute announced that it had signed an MOU with Optolane Co., Ltd. at the Uijeongbu campus at 4 pm for molecular diagnosis and R&D of leukemia.

The Leukemia Omics Research Institute said that it had signed an agreement with Optorain, a semiconductor-based biomarker analysis platform company, for ‘cooperation in blood cancer research using digital real-time PCR platform’.

In order to solve the limitations of the 'quantitative real-time PCR diagnostic method' currently used in the diagnosis and monitoring of chronic myeloid leukemia and use it for leukemia research and treatment, the two institutions will research and advance global ultra-precision digital PCR diagnostic methods, and discover new biomarkers related to leukemia. , said that the research team of both sides will conduct mutual exchanges over the next five years.

Until now, when targeted chemotherapy is performed on leukemia patients, the number of blood cancer (leukemia) cells gradually decreases. Hematological cancer is known to recur in about 50 to 60% of cases, and many patients said that they had the inconvenience of continuously taking expensive targeted anticancer drugs.

Professor Dongwook Kim's research team at Uijeongbu Eulji University Hospital conducted joint research with Optolane Co., Ltd. to advance the semiconductor-based digital PCR diagnostic technology and expand clinical applications based on the know-how gained through research cooperation with an American nanotechnology-based company for 10 years from 2010 In particular, through this research and development, it is expected that it will reduce the accumulation of side effects and reduce the burden of treatment costs for patients taking long-term anticancer drugs by accurately selecting whether or not to stop treatment with targeted anticancer drugs for leukemia patients.

Optolane's next-generation digital PCR technology is a new technology that quantitatively measures ultrafine leukemia genes conveniently using semiconductor optical sensors.

Director Kim Dong-wook, who is recognized as an authority in the field of chronic myeloid leukemia treatment and research, said, “As this is a study for the life and quality of life of blood cancer patients around the world, we apply various new technologies to derive breakthrough results, and through continuous research, we are the world’s best research institute. It will become a '," he said.

Professor Dong-wook Kim's research team proved that the presence of microresidual leukemia is an important variable in relapse through the study on discontinuation of targeted anticancer drug treatment, which has been in progress since 2010. It has been announced that it is important.
